Top Load Whirlpool Washer Won't Spin Troubleshooting Guide

Top Load Whirlpool Washer Won’t Spin Free Troubleshooting

When your top load Whirlpool washer won’t spin there are a few steps you need to take to figure out why it’s not spinning. The first thing to do is try and reset the electronics by cutting power to the washer at the breaker/fuse panel on your home for one full minute then restore power. Cancel the cycle and start a new one if it still won’t spin check the things listed below.

Before you begin following the information below make sure that your washer model number is listed in the model list at the bottom of this page in the tags section otherwise the information provided might not be relevant to your washer. All relevant parts you may need to make this repair are listed at the bottom of this page.

Lid Lock

Is the lid lock locking? Can you hear the lid lock engaging when you start a cycle? Is the lid actually locked?

If you answered yes to all of these questions move on to the next step below. If you answered no to any of these questions replace the lid lock assembly on the washer. If the lid is not locking or the lid lock is malfunctioning the control will not allow the washer to start or continue a cycle.

Water Inlet Valve

Did the washer fill with water? Is both the hot and cold side of the valve working properly?

If the washer does not fill with water replace the water inlet valve. If the washer is not filling with water the main control board will not allow the washer to continue or start a cycle. Replace the water inlet valve.

Drain Pump

Is the washer draining? Can you hear the drain pump running?

If the drain pump is not draining water from the washer the main control will not allow the washer to spin, continue or start a cycle. Replace the drain pump.

Motor

Is the motor running, did the washer agitate and go through the wash cycle but failed to spin? If that is the case then it’s likely the shift actuator has failed. That is the control that shifts the gearbox between agitate and spin so if it’s just stuck on agitate and not spinning that is the problem. Replace the shift actuator.

If none of the scenarios above apply to your situation then it gets much more complicated to figure out why your top load Whirlpool washer won’t spin.

From here what you will need to do is start by activating the service diagnostic test mode on your Whirlpool washer. Below is a link to download the service technical sheet for these models.
